The Malay Education and Cultural Centre of Australia Inc (MECCA) was established in 2009 as a means to realise the first Islamic Centre Project that specifically identifies with the culture and traditions of the Melbourne Malay community.
It is a relatively new community represented by a diverse sub-ethnic group from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand. There are also Malays of Sri Lankan and South African origin.
The effort to establish a purpose-built Islamic Centre is geared towards promoting positive Malay identity and participation in the wider Australian society. In doing so it indirectly affirms the endurance of the Malay community and provides a springboard of meritorious activities in which all are invited to partake.
